The new president of Sam Houston State University told faculty and staff Thursday that while budget cuts loom in the immediate future, she also sees “the need and the opportunity” to add new degree programs, build new facilities to house them, and recruit more students.
The City of Huntsville has submitted a project for competition of funding through Pepsi Company under their Pepsi Refresh Project to build a new baseball field at Kate Barr Ross Park. Walker County Judge Danny Pierce, with the support of the Commissioners Court, has imposed a burn ban for Walker County, effective for 90 days beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31.
Precinct 1 Commissioner B.J. Gaines Jr. included in his motion for the ban a condition that Pierce could, if conditions warrant, lift the ban prior to the 90 days.
County Emergency Management Director Butch Davis said that even though there has been spotty rain, the Keetch-Byram Drought Index rating has been climbing. That is the measuring system used by the U.S. Forest Service to determine various levels of dryness and drought within forests and rangeland as it relates to fire danger.
The Walker County Commissioners Court decided Monday not to turn years of rights-of-way policy upside down by allowing the replatting of land owned by Johnny Dean Hall off Highway 19 in the Walnut Creek Subdivision in Precinct 3.
Hall had requested the variance because Morris Lane was not built in the easement path originally granted on the property. Instead, the road was built as a horseshoe leaving the right-of-way easement as a straight line between the two ends of the horseshoe. Planning and Development Director Andrew Isbell said he did not know how that happened and that it took place “many, many years ago.”
The Huntsville ISD Board of Trustees met Thursday night and heard a report that the district was listed as Academically Acceptable by the Texas Education Agency. Several campuses were listed as Recognized.
Other items discussed include TAKS retesting status, the district's status under the Adequate Yearly Progress portion of the No Child Left Behind Act, the 2010-2011 Proposed Budget, and an update on construction and renovation at two campuses, among other items. Friday, August 27, 2010
The Huntsville City Council Thursday night officially adopted Nov. 2 as the date for the city’s general election for four at-large places on the Council and set polling places. The drawing for ballot positions was scheduled Friday morning.
In Position 1 James Fitch, deputy chief of the Sam Houston State University Public Safety Department and a former Huntsville police officer, will face incumbent Dalene Zender, a local Realtor®.
For Position 2, incumbent Melissa Templeton, a local businesswoman and licensed counselor, will face Lydia Montgomery, manager of the New Life Retail Store.
In Position 3, incumbent Charles Forbus, a retired AT&T employee and community volunteer, will be challenged by Don Johnson, a business consultant.
