Burn Ban Imposed For County As Rainfall Ebbs

Walker County Judge Danny Pierce, with the support of the Commissioners Court, has imposed a burn ban for Walker County, effective for 90 days beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31.

Precinct 1 Commissioner B.J. Gaines Jr. included in his motion for the ban a condition that Pierce could, if conditions warrant, lift the ban prior to the 90 days.

County Emergency Management Director Butch Davis said that even though there has been spotty rain, the Keetch-Byram Drought Index rating has been climbing. That is the measuring system used by the U.S. Forest Service to determine various levels of dryness and drought within forests and rangeland as it relates to fire danger.

Commissioners Deny Variance - Cite Need To Uphold Development Regulations

The Walker County Commissioners Court decided Monday not to turn years of rights-of-way policy upside down by allowing the replatting of land owned by Johnny Dean Hall off Highway 19 in the Walnut Creek Subdivision in Precinct 3.

Hall had requested the variance because Morris Lane was not built in the easement path originally granted on the property. Instead, the road was built as a horseshoe leaving the right-of-way easement as a straight line between the two ends of the horseshoe. Planning and Development Director Andrew Isbell said he did not know how that happened and that it took place “many, many years ago.”
